The first thing to realise is the differences in types of fragrances that are available. In fact, it often confuses many people that there are different names, such as toilette, cologne, etc. Here is a basic guide:

Eau de Toilette is a spray that has perfume dissolved in the alcohol. It can be comprised of anything from 5 per cent to 15 per cent pure perfume and is a popular choice as the smell lasts for a good few hours.

Perfume – Although this can be now often referred to as women’s scent it is in fact eau de parfum and it contains more pure perfume than eau de toilette, so it lasts longer and you tend to use much less of it as it is a stronger smell, so although it is more expensive to buy, it can also be longer lasting.

It is also important to realise that when choosing a scent what you first smell is not how the scent will remain – the scent will change over the hours as there are various notes to it as the top notes, which is the lighter part will give way to the medium notes which will then give way to the base notes. So, it is important to test a scent and then keep having a whiff every few hours to check if it is still as good as it evolves.

It is a good idea to try a few different scents out too and keeping comparing them throughout the day – there are many people who may love a particular scent to begin with but then start to favour a different one as the day goes on. Doing it this way is a good way to ensure that you pick out the right scent and get the person a gift that they will love and be able to enjoy every day.
